Rie Norum – Norway

Needle and thread have long traditions in my family and my first encounter with patchwork was in the mid-80s when my mother sat and cut long strips of pastel colored cotton fabrics that I thought would be used for rags. But no - she had just taken her first patchwork class and was making log cabin blocks. She taught me meticulously how to sew various blocks and do the binding.

Years passed and on a course in 2001 I met Hilde Krohg and it was great to meet a like-minded person with the same sewing interest. Imagine being able to discuss fabrics, patterns and techniques with someone who was as passionate as myself! We were both full-time working mums with technical background. We found resonance in each other's work and it ended up with the book Bright and Breezy, which came out in 2007. My designs have also been featured in ‘Quiltemagasinet’ and ‘myQuilt’.

The traditional quilts are closest to my heart, and I enjoy making my own twist to the traditional blocks by having untraditional color choices or by decorating with some buttons, embroidery or sequins. I like to use so-called ‘reproductions’ that are copies of fabrics made several hundred years ago and sometimes I also mix them with retro fabrics from the 70's. This brings a surprising element into the design. The common denominator for my designs is that they unfold gradually without a predefined plan which makes me fully enjoy the process.

As a quilt instructor since 2005, I have been fortunate to be able to share my passion for patchwork and quilting through various courses, from beginners’ classes or special techniques, to inspirational courses completely free of pre-printed patterns.

My goal is to inspire people to enjoy sewing, be creative and to find their own style.
